In the intensive care ward of the hospital, there is often a very difficult situation, with multiple organs that appear to be unrelated, like the dominoes that have been pushed down, with functional abnormalities, which is the multi-organ functional impairment syndrome (MODS), which, while unknown, poses a serious threat to life and deserves our insight. What’s multi-organ functional syndrome? MODS is not a single disease, but a clinical syndrome of functional impairments that occurs in two or more previously healthy organs within a short period of time, following severe trauma, infection, shock, surgery, etc. For example, when a person suffers from a severe car accident, a fracture, a haemorrhage and emergency treatment, which would have been able to recover from the fracture, it is possible that the lung has decreased, the kidney function has been damaged, and even the heart has suffered, which may have been MoDS. It can evolve rapidly in hours to days after the original injury, and progresses as if a storm struck. The fuse that triggered the storm.Serious infections: sepsis is a common “behaviour”, bacteria, viruses, fungi and other pathogens enter the human body, produce toxins in large numbers, travel with blood, activate the immune system’s excesses, immunocells “one thousand self-inflicted 800”, inflammation causes “blasting” and respiratory stress and kidney filtration disorders. An organ such as the old person’s lung infection is not well controlled and can easily be “down” to the heart, liver, etc.Trauma and surgery: severe car accidents, high-level crashes and other traumas, causing extensive soft tissue damage, fractures, internal bleeding, strong physical stress, haemorrhaging, loss of blood, anaesthesia, loss of organ “energy” supplies, prolonged anaesthesia, anesthesia, abrasion, loss of blood, post-operative risk of infection, may also trigger MODS to move the body from a “crisis” to a “disaster” of multiple organs.Frustration: The core, whether hemorrhage, infectious or heart-borne, is a severe reduction in the effective circulation of blood in the whole body, “blood supply” for vital organs, and the sacrifice of external organs for a long period of time, with kidneys and gastrointestinal tracts bearing the brunt, followed by a chain reaction leading to a “protest” strike on the whole body. “Alarm” by the body. The symptoms of MODS are complex and vary from organ to organ. There was a problem with the lungs, which initially had a high rate of respiratory activity, 20 times per minute, and which had become difficult to breathe and blue lips, which had to be sustained by a breathing machine, as if the drowning had been rescued and the pulmonary water had caused respiratory distress, which could subsequently lead to an increase in the MoDS lung disease. Renal stress results in a sharp reduction of urine (less than 400 ml of urine for 24 hours), edema, ingestion of metabolic waste and excess water, and accumulation of toxins, electrolytic disorders. Hepatic damage is manifested in yellow slulls, white eyes, yellow skins, and hepatic function indicators that are soaring, affecting many functions, such as condensation, detoxification, etc. The heart is disturbed, heart pains, heart disorders, and, in serious cases, heart-pumping weakness, endangering life. Gastrointestinal disorders include abdominal swelling, vomiting, vomiting of blood, constipation of the intestinal mucous barrier, and intestinal bacterial transfer compounding the overall infection. Combating the “multi-organ crisis” Prevention is the key “line of defence”. Infection prevention in everyday life, hand washing, masking and timely vaccination; control of chronic patients, high blood pressure, regular medication for diabetics, control of blood sugar, reduction of chronic damage to organs and reduction of the risk of MODS in the event of a major blow. Those in high-risk occupations (construction workers, firefighters, etc.) adhere to safety norms to protect against accidental trauma. In the event of a serious injury or illness, prompt medical attention is required, and the doctor is able to prevent the deterioration of the “chain” of the condition, in accordance with the conditions of the disease, resistance to infection, shock, precision surgery to repair the trauma, and close monitoring of organ function indicators. Nutritional support during the patient’s rehabilitation period is important for the repair of assisted organs, such as proteins and vitamins, and for the awakening of the organ’s “vibrity” with appropriate rehabilitation exercise. MODS is a physical “holocaust”, but as long as we know the risks, build a firm line of defence and respond in a timely manner, we can guard the body’s “functioning building” before the disease “throws down the dominoes” to keep life alive and healthy.
