It’s a re-emergence. Why five years?

The concept of “five-year survival” is often heard in our awareness of and response to cancer. In particular, when we refer to the re-emergence of some tumour treatment, we often hear the phrase “five years is a canal”. So why is five years so important? First, it is understood that the five-year survival rate is an important indicator of the effects of tumour treatment. It refers mainly to the proportion of patients who have been able to survive for five years after comprehensive treatment. This is not just a simple question of survival, but an assessment of the effects of treatment. In the field of oncology, many tumours are treated with a relatively high risk of relapse or transfer within five years. Therefore, the physical, psychological and subsequent rehabilitation of patients during these five years is crucial. Secondly, these five-year time horizons allow for a good observation of the reoccurrence of the tumor. If, after five years, there is no relapse or transfer of the patient, it is often indicated that the treatment has worked well and that the patient has a relatively good prognosis. Conversely, if a relapse or transfer occurs within five years, the difficulty of treatment and the quality of life of the patient are significantly affected. In addition, the five-year time frame is an important stage in the ongoing care and monitoring of patients. Oncology treatment is not a one-off process, and for many patients it is a protracted war. In this process, the doctor is required to monitor and evaluate the patient ‘ s condition on a regular basis, and the patient and his/her family are also required to cooperate actively with the treatment and rehabilitation programme. Finally, we would also like to recognize that, while the five-year survival rate is an important reference indicator, it is not all the factors that determine the survival of patients. Other things are equally important, such as the patient ‘ s habits of life, mental state, rehabilitation exercise, etc. Therefore, in the face of the recurrence of tumours, we should maintain a positive mentality, cooperate with the doctor ‘ s treatment programme and actively engage in rehabilitation and psychological adjustment. In short, five years is an important time node, which represents an important stage in the treatment of tumours. At this stage, we need to pay more attention to the patient ‘ s condition and needs and to give them all the care and support they need.
