When diagnosed with diabetes, many diabetics have a problem in their minds: do I have to take my medication for life? It’s really a matter of concern, and we’re here today to talk about whether people with diabetes have to take drugs for life.
First of all, it must be understood that diabetes is a chronic disease caused by insulin insufficiency or insulin in the body. Type 1 diabetes patients are almost unable to dispose of insulin due to severe damage to their own β-cells insulin, in which case it is often necessary to rely on external insulin injection for life to maintain blood sugar stability. The situation of type 2 diabetes patients is relatively complex. At an early stage of the disease, it may be that insulin resistance is predominant and that body cells are less “sensitive” to insulin, at which point the insulin β-cells will work hard to make more insulin available. If, at this stage, it is discovered in a timely manner that it is possible to restore normality to blood sugar by adjusting lifestyles, such as diet control, exercise and weight reduction, for the time being, without taking medication.
However, if type 2 diabetes patients do not receive attention at an early stage, the condition continues to develop, and the β-cell function in insulin becomes less functional, it may not be enough to rely on lifestyle interventions alone, requiring medication. This does not mean, however, that there must be a lifetime of medication. Some diabetes patients, after a period of good blood sugar control and under the guidance of a doctor, can gradually reduce their dosages or even stop, but only if their lifestyle is strictly regulated and blood sugar is regularly monitored.
The need for life-long medication for people with diabetes cannot be generalized. The way of life is our “first line of defence” in the “field” of diabetes. As long as we act in a positive way, with a rational diet, a regular movement and a good mind, we can take more initiative in the fight against diabetes, and perhaps get rid of the “tight spell” of life-long medication and lead healthy lives. So, let’s not be discouraged by the diabetics.
